• Plot Synopsis: Shanghai, 1942. The World War II Japanese occupation of this Chinese city continues in force. Mrs. Mak, a woman of sophistication and means, walks into a caf, places a call, and then sits and waits. She remembers how her story began several years earlier, in 1938 China. She is not in fact Mrs. Mak, but shy Wong Chia Chi (Tang Wei). With WWII underway, Wong has been left behind by her father, who has escaped to England. As a freshman at university, she meets fellow student Kuang Yu Min (Wang Leehom) Kuang has started a drama society to shore up patriotism. As the theater troupes new leading lady, Wong realizes that she has found her calling, able to move and inspire audiences and Kuang. He convenes a core group of students to carry out a radical and ambitious plan to assassinate a top Japanese collaborator, Mr. Yee (Tony Leung). Each student has a part to play; Wong will be Mrs. Mak, who will gain Yees trust by befriending his wife (Joan Chen) and then draw the man into an affair. Wong transforms herself utterly inside and out, and the scenario proceeds as scripted until an unexpectedly fatal twist spurs her to flee. Shanghai, 1941. With no end in sight for the occupation, Wong having emigrated from Hong Kong goes through the motions of her existence. Much to her surprise, Kuang re-enters her life. Now part of the organized resistance, he enlists her to again become Mrs. Mak in a revival of the plot to kill Yee, who as head of the collaborationist secret service has become even more a key part of the puppet government. 日伪时期，广州沦陷，岭南大学迁至香港，小美女王佳芝是话剧社的骨干分子。汉奸易先生随汪精卫来到香港，王佳芝的同学邝裕民跟易先生的某个副官是小老乡，无意中得知消息。热血青年们心血来潮，决定设下圈套谋刺易先生，最终选定王佳芝施展美人计靠近易先生。

王佳芝本质上不过是个小女人，她暗恋邝裕民，内敛、克制的邝裕民却对她无动于衷。“美人计”可是要玩儿真的，尽管本质上不过是小青年们的热血游戏。原本纯 真的王佳芝为了“腐蚀”易先生，不得不提前培养“性经验”，为此，与有过嫖娼经验的同学梁闰生发生关系，一切原本都是为了“救国锄奸”啊，可王佳芝却遭到 同学们的窃笑，反倒是跟又老又秃的易先生在一起，才能获得内心的宣泄与解放，“因为一切都有了个目的”。

不曾想易先生突然返回上海，暗杀计划流产。珍珠港事件后，学校又迁回上海，王佳芝却留在了香港，因为她不愿再面对过往。两年后，同学们却再度向她发出召唤，让她到上海完成未竟的暗杀事业。

小说展开在王佳芝来到上海后，以“麦太太”的伪装身份出现在易太太及其“闺蜜”们的牌局上。王佳芝要在今晚假借“修耳钉”的名目把易先生骗到暗杀地点：珠 宝店。她惴惴不安，借故离开，在南京路上的咖啡馆等候易先生。在焦虑的等待期间，从前的种种复杂心绪掠上心头，王想起与易的种种暧昧情景，以及这两年的经 历，内心五味杂陈、徘徊不定。易先生终于来了，他尽管心狠手辣、老谋深算，却也想不到眼前这个跟自己暗渡陈仓了两年的小情人儿会是刺客的布局。

两人终于来到珠宝店。一路上王佳芝都在思忖易先生是不是真的爱过自己，想的全是小女人那些患得患失的小心思，跟什么国仇家恨全无关联。珠宝店外，刺客隐 身。王佳芝内心无比焦虑。在易先生低头为她挑选戒指的一霎那，王佳芝从他脸上的笑容突然感受到这个男人对自己的“爱”，于是在紧要关头示意易先生快走。大 汉奸心领神会，脚底抹油，拔腿就走。

未几，南京路被封锁。某个参与谋杀行动的热血青年被捕，马上招供。不到晚上十点，除了一条漏网之鱼，暗杀团成员全被处决，包括王佳芝。易先生回到家，太太 们还在打麻将，吵吵着要让他请客吃饭。易先生不动声色，心里却在想着王佳芝。易先生觉得，这个女人真是“爱”我的，生是我的人，死是我的鬼。可他必须杀 她。在太太们的笑声中，易先生静静地走出房门。
